1964-1972 Interior Vinyl Spray Dye, Gray Primer
The 1964–1972 Interior Vinyl Spray Dye, Gray Primer is a specialized automotive-grade formulation designed by classic GM restoration suppliers like Classic Parts. Sold individually as a convenient aerosol spray can, this product functions as an essential foundation coat when altering or restoring the soft-trim color layouts of classic muscle car interiors.
Purpose & Functionality
-
- The Dark-to-Light Transition: This specialized gray primer dye is specifically required when dyeing darker interior items over to a lighter factory color (such as transforming black or dark saddle vinyl components into pristine factory Parchment, Pearl, White, or Fawn).
- High-Opacity Block Out: Standard interior vinyl topcoats are thin by design to keep from filling in or flattening out the original leather grain texture. Without this gray primer base layer, dark background plastics and vinyl will inevitably “bleed” through your new light paint, ruining the finish.
Vehicle Platform Sharing
Because General Motors heavily cross-standardized internal vinyl upholstery specs and grain finishes throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, this gray primer prep dye features universal application compatibility across the mid-size A-Body divisions:
- Chevrolet: 1964–1972 Chevelle, Malibu, SS, and El Camino.
- Pontiac: 1964–1972 GTO, LeMans, and Tempest.
- Oldsmobile & Buick: 1964–1972 Cutlass / 442 and Buick Skylark / GS.
