1968-1972 Chevelle Firewall Rod Boot

The 1968–1972 Chevelle firewall rod boot (specifically known as the clutch pushrod firewall boot) is a flexible molded rubber seal used on manual transmission models. It sits directly on the engine side of the firewall, allowing the upper clutch linkage rod to transition cleanly from the interior clutch pedal out to the bellcrank/Z-bar assembly.

Its primary job is to encapsulate the moving linkage rod, effectively sealing off the passenger cabin from engine heat, oil fumes, road moisture, and drafts.
📐 Material & Manufacturing Specs

  • Factory Tooling Reproductions: Premium restoration options are engineered using original General Motors tooling. They are officially licensed GM Restoration Parts, ensuring the shape behaves exactly like the factory original.
  • Durable Construction: Modern replacements are molded from high-grade, black EPDM or spun rubber. This provides maximum resistance against thermal breakdown under the hood and allows the rubber to flex repeatedly without cracking during clutch engagement.
  • Exact Fitment: Replaces original GM Part # 3999904. It matches the unique 3-bolt layout of the firewall opening slightly below and to the left of the steering column.
🚗 Broad Vehicle Interchange

Because GM utilized the same A-body framework across divisions during these model years, this firewall boot is a direct replacement for several classic muscle cars:
  • Chevrolet: Chevelle, El Camino, and Monte Carlo.
  • Pontiac: GTO, LeMans, Grand Prix, and Tempest.
  • Oldsmobile: Cutlass and 442.

  • Buick: Skylark.
🔧 Sourcing & Installation Tips

  • Component Sourcing: Note that most retailers sell the flexible rubber boot as a standalone piece. The stamped steel reinforcement ring (the retainer plate) and the mounting screws must generally be purchased separately or as part of a complete master kit.
  • Resto-Mod Note: If you are performing an automatic-to-manual swap on an original automatic car, you will need to map out the factory placement location, clear away a 2.5-inch section of the firewall insulation foam, and cut a 2.5-inch pass-through hole using a hole saw to route the upper rod and mount the boot
