1969-1972 Ignition Switch, with tilt
The 1969-1972 Ignition Switch (With Tilt) is an essential column-mounted electrical component designed exclusively for vintage GM vehicles featuring a factory tilt steering column.
While it sits on the same lower column jacket area as its non-tilt counterpart, tilt and non-tilt ignition switches operate in opposite directions. On a non-tilt column, the dash actuator rod pushes the switch downward toward the firewall to crank the car. On a tilt column, the internal linkage pulls the rod upward toward the steering wheel. Because of this mechanical difference, installing a non-tilt switch on a tilt column will prevent your car from starting and may melt your wiring harness.
Product Specifications & Details
- Wiring Layout: Features a factory-accurate 9-prong terminal block to plug directly into the original dash harness.
- OEM Cross-Reference: Replaces original GM factory part numbers #1990095, #1990111, #1990085, or AC Delco #D-2207.
- Key Installation Step: Just like the non-tilt version, you must physically pin the new switch slider and your ignition key cylinder into the “Lock” position before bolting it down. Because tilt columns use a multi-piece linkage to pivot at the column knuckle, proper mechanical alignment during installation is critical to prevent the key from binding.
- Vehicle Application: Fits 1969, 1970, 1971, and 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle, Malibu, El Camino, Monte Carlo, Camaro, Nova, Pontiac GTO, and Oldsmobile Cutlass models equipped with option A20 (Tilt Steering Column).
